Bruce to Milton Transmission Line Reinforcement
Timberland’s equipment was used to construct 180 km in length of a new 500-kV double-circuit transmission line from the Bruce Power complex in Kincardine, Ontario to the Milton switching station just outside of Toronto. In total, 720 steel lattice towers weighing approximately 26,000 tonnes were assembled and set, and 4,700 kilometres of conductor were strung and energized.
At the time of construction, this was the largest power line project underway in Canada. It was the largest expansion to Ontario’s transmission system in 20 years, and the first time the client had entrusted a third party to work on its high-voltage system.
Originally scheduled for completion in December 2012, the project was brought in seven months ahead of schedule at the request of the client. To achieve this, the project was compressed from an 11-month construction schedule into just four months, while still maintaining utmost safety and quality. The project was completed without any serious injuries or lost-time incidents.
At the public announcement of the power line’s completion, Ontario Energy Minister Chris Bentley stated, “Today marks a major milestone in Ontario’s electricity infrastructure.”
